AACD: The Role and Impact of Voters with Disabilities and People of Color on the outcome of the 2020 General Election
February 26, 2021 10:00 am - 11:00 am
African American Conference on Disabilities - Session 11 Synopsis: Despite a global pandemic with a disproportionate impact on people of color and those with disabilities, voter turnout reached historic levels for the 2020 election. Amid the ongoing debates about the health of our communities and our economy, election administrators faced the difficult task of determining how to best adapt their practices and procedures to conduct safe, secure, accessible, and accurate elections. Working alongside disability advocates and the civil rights community, the U.S. Election Assistance Commission helped secure the election while ensuring voters full and equal access to the ballot.

Smart but Scattered: How Parents Can Help Children Strengthen Executive Skills to Reach Their Full Potential
Presented by Peg Dawson, Ed.D.
Executive skills are critical to the acquisition of academic skills, but, more importantly, they are the skills students need to get things done. They are brain-based skills such as task initiation, sustained attention, working memory, planning, organization, and goal-directed persistence that are absolutely critical to school success. Some students seem to acquire them naturally, but many students struggle with them. Dr. Peg Dawson, co-author of the books "Smart but Scattered" and "Smart but Scattered Teens," will describe how these skills develop throughout childhood and suggest strategies parents can use to help children acquire the critical skills they need to be successful students.

Superparenting for ADHD: An Innovative Approach to Raising Your Distracted Child
Presented by Ned Hallowell, M.D.
With decades of experience working with ADD children, Dr. Edward Hallowell—a pediatric psychiatric clinician, father of two ADD children, and himself an adult with ADD—understands how easily the gifts of this condition are lost on a child amid negative comments from doctors, teachers, and even loving but frustrated parents. Dr. Hallowell has long argued that ADD is too often misunderstood, mistreated, and mislabeled as a “disability.” The practical strength-based techniques Drs. Hallowell will present put the talents, charms, and positive essence of your child ahead of any presumed shortcomings.

Executive Skills: The Hidden Curriculum that is Essential for School Success
Presented by Peg Dawson, Ed.D.
Executive skills are task-oriented skills that underlie students’ ability to learn. Although seldom taught explicitly, it has become apparent to professionals and parents alike that students who are strong in these skills are more successful than those who aren't. This webinar will introduce the "Smart but Scattered" model of executive skills, which consists of 6 foundational skills and 5 advanced skills that students need to be successful learners. These skills will be presented within a developmental context and will include a discussion of how these skills look different in children with neurodevelopmental disorders, such as ADHD, autism spectrum disorder, and learning disabilities. Three intervention strategies for supporting students with executive skill challenges will be described.
